In the United States alone, it is estimated that around twenty-one billion pounds of clothing and textiles are discarded annually. That equates to an average of around seventy pounds per person. This not only takes up valuable space in landfills, but it also contributes to the release of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, as clothing decomposes. Additionally, the majority of the clothing that ends up in landfills is still usable, which means that it could have been worn, reused, or recycled. This highlights the importance of recycling and donating clothing and textiles, to reduce the amount of waste in landfills and to ensure that the usable clothing and textiles are put to beneficial use.
